The Changbai Mountain Range, also called the Jangbaek Mountain Range, situated on the border of China and North Korea is home to its highest peak, Changbai Mountain itself and the magical and picturesque Tianchi, or Heavenly Lake in the crater of the volcanic mountain. With the literal meaning of “perpetually white mountain”, the mountain is part of the Changbai Nature Reserve as well as UNESCO’s World’s Biosphere Reserve and is a precious location for IHG’s Holiday Inn ski resort hotel.
The four star resort hotel sits comfortably nestled at the very base of the majestic mountain making it an extremely convenient base for the multitude of winter time skiers and summer time mountain trekkers that congregate for leisure. The ski chalet style architecture is laid out as a three pronged arrangement with the ground floor Main Entrance and Reception Lobby block at the center flanked on three sides, seemingly wrapping around the base of the mountain, by the Restaurant and Ski Bar, Spa and indoor Swimming Pool and the Banquet and Conference facilities.
Considering the adjacent snow covered slopes of the mountain, the spectacular views on offer on all sides, abundant penetrating sunshine and the lush green surroundings, the understated interior design of the hotel focuses on taking advantage of the immense natural beauty on offer by creating an experience in luxury that will be memorable for the user. The unpretentious colour scheme used for the interior was inspired by the mountain itself and the surrounding dramatic landscape and is an attempt to reach a balanced harmony between the exterior and the interior. It fuses the comfortable, cozy, homely, intimate and safe sentiment with that of the sophisticated leisure experience demanded by today’s modern traveler.
With the natural wondrous environment in mind the interior design concept uses uncomplicated and natural finishes such as wood paneled walls and columns, wood strip flooring, rough and polished stone, off-white plaster in a near natural state, timber and wicker furniture with leather and single tone upholstery and fabrics. Carefully selected artwork and patterned wooden screens, themselves inspired by nature, adorn the public spaces at key locations.
The Main Entrance and Reception Lobby of the hotel, well protected behind a robust double height portico and two sets of glass doors, is a large open plan arrangement with the dramatic double height Lobby Lounge below the canopy of a soaring timber framed ceiling supported by stout circular columns and reassuring timber beams. While the Reception and the Concierge desk sits calmly to the left of the entrance, the focal point of the space is a rectangular open fireplace with a dramatic, gravity defying chimney which floats down from the roof and creates a magnet of welcoming warmth after a weary day of skiing on the snowy slopes. A polished dark stone raised plinth all around the fireplace forms a welcoming seat or simply a table to rest your hot chocolate or cognac while large, comfortable timber and wicker furniture with ample soft furnishings are arranged around this center-piece. Lantern like suspended lamps of various proportions, suspended from the timber beams above, provide soft and cozy lighting to complete the warm and inviting atmosphere.
The Main Lobby is flanked on two sides by the Resort Centre and the Lobby Bar, with both spaces offering varying degrees of comfort and refuge for the guests. The mix of wooden strip flooring and custom designed deep pile carpets offer warmth underfoot while timber paneled walls and shelving and concealed warm lighting gives the spaces the cozy embrace that one would look for on a cold and blustery day when skiing is not an option. The medieval like circular chandeliers with their steel frames and cylindrical glass lamp shades resembling candles offer further artificial light. Again, the polished stone clad fireplaces in each space create the center-piece and undoubtedly the most sought after spot in each room.
The linear arrangement of the All Day Dining Restaurant, again with wood strip flooring, two toned wood paneled walls and patterned wooden screens, offers a variety of seating options along a floor to ceiling window wall with fabulous views of the mountain. The Ski Bar, located at the end of one of the three wings of the hotel and planned so that it is at the foot of one of the ski runs, is an ideal spot for much needed refreshment after a hard days exercise or for late night reveling. The island bar surrounded by comfortable leather armchairs and bar stool type seating is enveloped by stone clad walls and a soaring wood framed ceiling creating a cozy, warm and safe environment for the all too familiar act of relaxation.
Whether you are a thrill seeker, a romantic or simply someone who wants to unwind away from today’s modern and manic lifestyle, the Holiday Inn at Changbaishan offers a refuge for your heart and your soul against a breathtaking backdrop of the best that nature has to offer.
